Inside the Mind of a Publisher

Description

You may view your writing as a ministry, but to a publisher, publishing is first and foremost a business. Evaluating your writing through the eyes of a publisher means learning how to think about, write, and market your manuscript like a publisher. You will enhance your writing and become more successful by focusing on how these three components will make you more successful.

Session Outline

Setting the Scene
Creating the Solution
Thinking Like a Publisher

  • Is this manuscript a good match with the other books we publish?
  • Does this author have a proven and positive track record?
  • Will this manuscript sell?
  • How many copies can we realistically expect to sell?
  • Will this manuscript earn back its expenses and royalty?

Writing Like a Publisher

  • Is the query or proposal complete and does it fit our house?
  • Is this manuscript tightly written?
  • Is the manuscript complete?
  • What will enhance the manuscript?

Marketing Like a Publisher

  • Can this author toot his or her own horn?
  • Can this author do creative publicity?
  • Can this author play with the big boys?
  • Can this book be developed into other related products/rights?

Session Format

The session will utilize a PowerPoint presentation that will help writers understand the publishing side of the business, and decisions publishers have to make as they read queries, proposals, manuscripts and articles. The session can be tailored to fill an hour to an hour and a half.
